Donut chart maker in Lightchart: website sessions by channel with the total in the center and the largest slice highlighted

    The basics

What a pie & donut chart is, and when to use one.

A pie chart divides a circle into slices sized by each part's share of a whole. A donut chart (or doughnut chart) is a pie with a hole in the middle, which is handy for a total or a label.

Lightchart handles both, with segment gaps, rounded caps on donuts, a center label, and labels inside or outside the slices.

    • Showing a few parts of one whole, like a budget split across four channels.
    • When one slice is the story, like organic search bringing 52% of traffic.
    • Market or audience share with two to six categories.
    • Compact summary visuals next to a KPI, where a full bar chart is too much.

    Frequently asked questions

Pie chart or donut chart: which is better?

They read the same way. A donut frees the center for a total or headline number, which often makes it the more useful choice in a report.

How many slices are too many?

Past five or six, slices get hard to compare. Group the small ones into Other, or use a bar chart.

Is this pie chart maker free?

Yes. Lightchart is free while in beta, with no credit card and no trial countdown. Make as many charts as you need and export them as PNGs.
