Sankey diagram maker in Lightchart: a quarterly marketing budget flowing into six channels with values and percentages

    The basics

What a sankey diagram is, and when to use one.

A Sankey diagram draws flows whose width matches their value, so you can see at a glance where a total goes: a budget into channels, or revenue into product lines.

Lightchart's Sankey generator draws one source flowing into up to 12 categories, shows totals, values or percentages, and folds the smallest flows into Other when space is tight.

    • Showing where a budget goes, like marketing spend by channel.
    • Breaking revenue into product lines or regions.
    • Showing how traffic splits across sources.
    • Any one-to-many split where proportions matter more than exact values.

    Step by step

    Make a sankey diagram.

    1. Step 1

      Paste categories and values

Each row is one destination. Name the source, like Revenue or Budget.

    2. Step 2

      Choose what each flow shows

Show the share of the source, the value, or both, and choose whether the source shows its total.

    3. Step 3

      Style and export

Pick a data color, set the category limit, then export a 2× PNG.

    Styling & export

Make it match your brand, then export.

    • The source shows its total, 100%, or just its name.
    • Categories show their share of the source, their value, or both.
    • A max-categories slider, with the rest grouped into Other.
    • Separate text styles for the source and the categories.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I make multi-level Sankey diagrams?

Not yet. Lightchart draws one source flowing into one layer of categories, which covers most budget and revenue splits.

Should I use a Sankey diagram or a pie chart?

Both show parts of a whole. A Sankey reads better with more categories, or when you want the flow from a named total to be explicit.

Is this Sankey diagram maker free?

Yes. Lightchart is free while in beta, with no credit card and no trial countdown. Make as many charts as you need and export them as PNGs.
