The basics
What a scatter plot is, and when to use one.
A scatter plot (also called a scatter graph, a scatter diagram or an X and Y chart) places one dot per item, positioned by two numeric values. Patterns in the dots reveal relationships, clusters and outliers.
Lightchart's scatter plot generator lets you color points by group, label them, and highlight the outlier you want to talk about.
- Checking whether two measures move together, like ad spend and revenue.
- Spotting outliers, like a store with high footfall and low sales.
- Mapping items on two dimensions, like growth vs margin by product.
- Comparing groups by coloring points by category.
Step by step

- Step 1

- Step 3
Tune and export
Adjust point size and gridlines, set the axis ranges, then export a 2× PNG.

Frequently asked questions
Is this scatter plot maker free?
Yes. Lightchart is free while in beta, with no credit card and no trial countdown. Make as many charts as you need and export them as PNGs.
How many points can I plot?
Dozens comfortably. For a presentation, fewer than about 50 labeled points keeps the chart readable.
Can I add a trendline?
Not yet. Lightchart doesn't draw regression lines. Use color and a takeaway title to point at the pattern instead.
What's the difference between a scatter plot and a line chart?
A line chart connects ordered points to show change. A scatter plot leaves the points unconnected to show the relationship between two measures.
